The Gems are stimulated to think parochially, to religiously hold their Diamonds are the nec plus ultra of reasoning and civilization. Even Peridot, who was fanatically devoted to them, came off that within a month of exposure.
It's inconceivable that only ever happened on Earth. Gems are free moral agents. Gem culture, on the other hand, is rigid, hierarchical and oppressive. Inherently unstable, in other words.
